“As long as we live, there is never enough singing.” For as long as I can remember, I have loved to sing. From singing along to the radio, to singing solos in front of large audiences, my vocals are my expertise. Though I do have passions in almost every field of music such as dance, acting and instrumental music, I enjoy singing more than the rest.
My passion was developed when I acted in my first show at the age of seven. I do not remember most of the experience but I know that I did choose to stick with it for many years to come. I only realized my passion for singing exclusively when I started taking singing lessons around fifth grade. My sister took them for a year and I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps and become a singer. So the next year I went in for my first official singing lesson. I was so scared of the woman, (Mrs. Corso, who would be my singing teacher up until my senior year of high school.) She could barely hear me sing the notes. But I loved it more than anything else and kept at it for every year following.
Almost every year since I’ve started singing, I’ve performed in NYSSMA. NYSSMA stands for New York State School Music Association. It involves preparing a piece of music, performing it memorized in front of a judge and then sight reading a piece of music of the judge’s choice. This is what my singing lessons would be centered around. Every year I would go up a level, and the songs would get harder and harder. It was very nerve racking and more stressful than you can imagine, but I always did well. By the end of my NYSSMA career I had gotten an A or A plus on every piece I performed, attended two All County singing festivals that I was nominated for, and was nominated for an All National choir. I have have been in approximately thirteen musical productions, with major singing leads in three. This past year alone I had the honor and privilege of performing many times through out the year. I performed a huge solo with the rest of my chamber choir singing backup in front of the whole community at Relay for Life, sang duets with one of my best friends at the Pops Concert and Relay for Life and sang an Italian opera solo at the first annual LOTE Honor Society induction.
Although I love singing, I was taught early that music is not a reliable career choice. For this reason instead of majoring in music or wanting to be a professional singer, I always keep it as number one in my activity interests. I am excited to be involved in University Choir and maybe even start an accapella group on campus. I hope to be an early childhood teacher, teaching children in Italy. I know I will be able to incorporate my love for singing into the early childhood curriculum and teach my children the joy of singing at a very young age.
Singing is part of my life in every way. As a matter of fact, as I’m writing this in the library, I have to restrain myself from singing along to the music I’m listening to. J I can’t escape my temptation to sing even if I wanted to. Singing brings me joy and has really helped me show the person I am. When you’re singing, your true personality shines through, through the words you sing. Even though singing in front of anyone is intimidating, it makes me feel so rewarded inside for being able to share my joy with others. Singing isn’t just my expertise; it is what I enjoy most.
